University of Warwick - Introduction to Probability (ST120)

ST120: Introduction to Probability provides a foundational understanding of mathematical probability and techniques for calculating probabilities and expectations, essential for advanced studies in probability and statistics. Key areas of focus include random experiments, probability spaces, conditional probability, Bayes' theorem, random variables, distributions, moment-generating functions, inequality theorems, and the central limit theorem. Students will learn to solve probabilistic problems, model random experiments, apply conditional probability, and interpret probability models. Co-requisites are MA132: Foundations and MA141: Analysis 1, and the module leads to ST121: Statistical Laboratory and ST220: Introduction to Mathematical Statistics. While not available to Statistics department students, it is ideal for those considering transfers to Data Science, Mathematics & Statistics, or MORSE programmes, offering a strong interdisciplinary approach for applying mathematical techniques to probabilistic methods.
