This introductory module, ECON1043: Foundations of Economics is designed for Year 1 undergraduate students in BA (Hons) Politics and Economics or BA (Hons) Economics and Philosophy, and cannot be taken alongside ECON1022 Foundations of Microeconomics or ECON1023 Foundations of Macroeconomics. It provides a comprehensive foundation in microeconomics and macroeconomics, requiring no prior knowledge of the subject. The first semester focuses on microeconomics, exploring consumer and producer theory, market demand and supply, price mechanisms, and various market structures, from perfect competition to monopolies, while addressing the evaluation of economic outcomes and market failures. The second semester shifts to macroeconomics, examining the aggregate economy with an emphasis on short-term cyclical fluctuations, long-term economic growth, and the role of government in fiscal and monetary policy, alongside an introduction to key macroeconomic models.
