ST104B: Statistics 2 builds on ST104A: Statistics 1, focusing on probability theory, statistical distributions, estimation methods, and hypothesis testing. Topics include set theory, counting rules, Bayes’ theorem, and various probability distributions (binomial, Poisson, normal, and exponential). The course also covers multivariate random variables, joint and marginal distributions, covariance, and sums of random variables. Key statistical concepts such as sampling distributions, the Central Limit Theorem, estimator properties (bias, variance, and mean squared error), and estimation techniques (method of moments, least squares, and maximum likelihood) are explored. Additionally, students will learn about analysis of variance (one-way and two-way ANOVA) for statistical modelling.

To enrol, students must take this course alongside or after ST104A: Statistics 1. It cannot be taken with ST1215: Introduction to Mathematical Statistics. By completing the course, students will be able to compute probabilities for univariate and multivariate random variables, apply statistical operators, and recall key probability distributions. They will also develop skills in deriving and analysing parameter estimators and gain familiarity with fundamental statistical modelling techniques, particularly in analysis of variance.
