This course introduces students to key concepts in asset pricing and corporate finance, providing a theoretical foundation for project appraisal, risk pricing, securities valuation, market efficiency, capital structure, and mergers and acquisitions. Topics covered include investment evaluation methods (NPV and IRR), portfolio mathematics, capital asset pricing models (CAPM and APT), derivative pricing (Black–Scholes model and binomial methods), market efficiency theories, corporate governance, and the motivations behind mergers and acquisitions. Students will explore the trade-offs firms face between debt and equity financing, taxation and bankruptcy costs, and the effects of information asymmetry on capital structure. Dividend policy theories, including the Modigliani–Miller theorem and Lintner’s dividend policy, are also examined.

By the end of the course, students will be able to evaluate investment projects, analyse risk and return in asset pricing models, apply factor models such as the Fama-French three-factor model, and understand corporate finance mechanisms. They will also be able to assess financial market efficiency, explain corporate governance structures, and calculate gains and losses in mergers and acquisitions. This course provides essential knowledge for careers in corporate finance, investment banking, and financial analysis.

Prerequisites (for BSc students): EC1002 Introduction to Economics and either MT105a Mathematics 1, MT105b Mathematics 2, or MT1174 Calculus. Exclusions: This course cannot be taken with AC3059 Financial Management, FN2190 Asset Pricing and Financial Markets, or FN2191 Principles of Corporate Finance.
