This module, Principles of Microeconomics - provides students with a thorough understanding of microeconomics at an introductory level and provides the basis for all subsequent study that is taken on microeconomics parts of the degree course. It is designed to teach students how to think as a microeconomist and how to construct and use microeconomic models. It shows them how to be critical of microeconomic models. The module shows how empirical evidence can be used in microeconomic and policy analysis.

The module explores how people make choices about what and how to produce and consume. It looks at the differences in economic outcomes between firms, people and countries and how they can be related to the effects of choices they and others make. It builds on the very simple and plausible assumption that people make decisions in their own interests and subject to constraints. Alternative models of economic behaviour are introduced. The emphasis throughout is to demonstrate the usefulness and limitations of microeconomics as an analytical tool for thinking about real world problems, investigating empirical evidence, and analysing polices.
