ECON4002: Principles of Macroeconomics introduces students to the study of the economy as a whole, focusing on major topics such as inflation, unemployment, GDP fluctuations, and long-term economic growth. The module explores how the combined behaviour of households, firms, and the government influences economic outcomes. Students will learn how to measure key indicators like GDP, inflation, and unemployment, and examine equilibrium in both goods and financial markets. The course also covers the use of macroeconomic models to assess the impact of government and central bank policies on factors such as consumption, inflation, and employment. Throughout, students will use mathematical and graphical tools to support their understanding of economic relationships and theories.

By the end of the module, students will have a solid grasp of the fundamental principles of macroeconomics and how they apply to real-world situations. They will be able to analyse the decisions of key economic agents and apply macroeconomic theory to current economic issues and debates. In addition, students will develop the ability to use analytical, graphical, and numerical methods to solve macroeconomic problems and interpret simple models that explain economic behaviour and outcomes.
