This unit, Advanced Financial Reporting (EFIM30033) - builds on material covered in Financial Accounting by examining a number of more advanced standards and adopting a critical view of financial reporting. It will re-examine the IASB Conceptual Framework and consider whether both the Framework and IFRS-based financial reporting are fit for purpose which will engage us in reviewing developments in this area such as sustainability reporting. The module also examines a number of advanced accounting issues such as revenue, deferred tax, employee benefits and financial instruments. It builds on the group accounting methods covered in Financial Accounting to cover more advanced areas of consolidated financial statements such as disposals and piecemeal acquisitions.

On successful completion of the unit, you will:

understand advanced accounting issues such as complex structures, financial instruments and deferred tax and how they are addressed by standard setters;
have a good understanding of the purpose and theoretical underpinning of financial reporting and its use;
be able to display an awareness of earnings management and the need for regulation;
understand the role of conceptual frameworks and the different approaches to value measurement including fair value;
be able to evaluate the accounting approaches for public benefit entities and related issues;
and, be able to explain approaches to corporate social and environmental accounting.
